This is a highly regarded work by the court painter Zhu Duan. With rough strokes of the brush, it contrasts snowy mountains and shadowy trees. A snowy cliff projects out over the river. Beyond the cliff, we can see a small boat slightly covered in snow, with a man fishing from it. The angler has hunched himself up to try and stay warm. The figure of this man, lonely yet free, dangling his line into the quiet river, is considered a symbol of the ideal secluded life. This is a common theme in Chinese landscape painting. The artist, Zhu Duan, was a court painter in the Ming dynasty, active in the first half of the 16th century. In this image, the snowy mountain and trees are clustered together at the bottom left, with the top right almost empty. This bold composition comes from the landscape painting style of court painters of the 13th century, the Song dynasty.

Zhu Duan was both a diligent student of this classical style, and also, with his use of ink and brush, an artist who reflected the tastes of a new era. For example, along the cliff, standing out white due to the snow heaped on it, and in the shadows of the trees, Zhu Duan used dark lines in a rough, tempestuous style. These ink lines are used to depict the roughness of the rocks and the bark on the tree trunks. Furthermore, the raw contrast between black and white, dark and light, creates a carefully calculated abstract beauty. The rough use of ink and brush seen here was a popular style in Chinese landscape painting from the 16th century onwards, and Zhu Duan is perhaps one of the artists who established its popularity.
