Famous Japanese swords often have names derived from their storied histories. This blade is named Hachiya Nagamitsu. The second half of the name refers to the master artisan Nagamitsu, who forged this blade in the 1200s. The first part recognizes a former owner, Hachiya, a rebellious samurai active during the civil wars of the 1500s.
