Artisans at the Seto kilns in central Japan specialized in crafting luxury ceramics based on Chinese porcelains and celadons. The shape and decoration of this storage jar were likely inspired by wine containers from Longquan, China. The peony flowers carved into the surface were considered symbols of wealth and social status throughout East Asia.
