Tōshōdaiji Temple in Nara was founded by Jianzhen (688–763), a renowned Buddhist monk who came to Japan from Tang-dynasty China. Shown here, its main hall is the only surviving central temple hall in Japan from the late 700s. Research shows that much of its original materials remain intact.
