This photograph was taken during the 1872 Jinshin Survey, Japan’s first nationwide investigation of cultural heritage. The project documented antiquities owned by shrines, temples, and members of the nobility. Shown here is a building at the Kyoto Imperial Palace that once served as the emperor’s living quarters.
