Made over 1,300 years ago, this is one of the oldest images of the Buddha Amida in Japan. Images of buddhas seated on pedestals accompanied by bodhisattvas standing on lotus flowers were popular in ancient Japan. Lotus flowers, which symbolize purity, are said to bloom profusely in a Buddhist paradise known as the Pure Land.
