“The summer nights are so short / it still feels like evening / yet the dawn is here / where in the clouds / could the moon be hiding?” Written in a delicate script over 1,000 years ago, this poem is considered one of the finest examples of classical Japanese calligraphy. It was carefully cut out from a poetry book and attached to a hanging scroll for display during tea gatherings.
